Abstract

We report a new locality for the Tolima Dove (Leptotila conoveri) and the first records of this species for the department of Cauca, extending its altitudinal range down to 1200 m. In this new locality Tolima Doves inhabit shrubby areas and secondary forest edges, crossing pastures to move between patches of forest. Three individuals were captured with mist nets and a specimen was collected. This species and the White-tipped Dove L. verreauxi are hunted locally; hunters distinguish the two species but are unaware that L. conoveri is an endemic, endangered bird of Colombia Because of this, is very important to teach and to sensitize the inhabitants of this area regarding the conservation of this species and its habitat.
