An annotated list of the birds of Malpelo island

Due to its remote location and difficult access, Malpelo Island’s avian biodiversity and ecology have not been fully described, despite sporadic records from as early as the late nineteenth century. We conducted intensive observations (both terrestrial and boat surveys) during eleven visits from late 2003 through late 2006 and supplemented these field observations with a detailed literature review of both published and unpublished data. We have documented the occurrence of 60 avian species on the island. For 52 of these species, we add new information concerning details of the reproduction of seven seabird species (Sula dactylatra, S. granti, S. Sula, Creagrus furcatus, Anous stolidus, A. minutus, and Gygis alba), likely breeding by three more species (Phaethon aethereus, Fregata magnificens, and F. minor), 22 first records, and 16 documentations of Malpelo as a site for avian migratory stopovers. Although Malpelo is primarily a seabird site, including the largest single breeding seabird colony in Colombia (S. granti) and only site in Colombia where three other seabirds breed (C. furcatus, A. minutus, and G. alba), the area is also a lesser stopover site for shorebirds, and occasional stopover site for landbirds. As observations continue (and intensify) at Malpelo, it is likely the known avian biodiversity will increase, especially in these last two categories.
