An atypically colored Hooded Mountain-Tanager (Buthraupis montana) was observed and photographed twice in a high Andean forest in Caldas, Colombia, in 2008 and 2009. The bird exhibited yellow patches on both sides of the face and head, blue thighs, and pale-pink feet. These parts are typically colored black in this species. Its bright red eyes and the rest of its plumage had the normal coloration of the species. This atypical coloration is likely associated with mutations in genes affecting melanin deposition in the integument and with the interactions between such mutations and the environment.
