Todd’s Parakeet (Pyrrhura picta caeruleiceps) had not been recorded for nearly 60 years in the department of Norte de Santander, Colombia. With the purpose of confirming its persistence in the department, I conducted exploratory surveys over five months in 2007, including visits to two localities where it had been collected in the municipalities of Ocaña and El Carmen. I found groups of Todd’s Parakeet at two sites located c. 40 linear km apart and close to historical collection sites. I observed a total of 55 individuals occupying premontane secondary forests and forest borders, where I was able to determine use of five different food sources. In addition, I characterized vocalizations, and found that there is one vocal type emitted by birds while perched and a different one associated with vigilance behavior. It is imperative to undertake conservation actions in the region involving local communities, because Todd’s Parakeet, a taxon that could deserve species status, is now under threats such as habitat destruction and nest poaching for the pet trade.
