Abstract

In birds leucism is the absence of pigment in some body parts because the melanin production or deposition is significantly reduced or absent, such that the animals show some parts of the skin and plumage white. A Ruddy Ground-Dove (Columbina talpacoti) with leucism was observed and photographed in the Meléndez campus, Universidad del Valle, Cali, Colombia, between October 2011 and March 2013. The bird had high levels of depigmentation in most of the body, with some tail and wings feathers slightly rufous, and the beak and the legs clear pink. Probably this is the first record of leucism for the species.
