Characterization and use of the habitat of Apolinar´s Wren Cistothorus apolinari (Troglodytidae) in wetlands of the Eastern Andes of Colombia

Habitat characteristics in plots used by the endemic and endangered Apolinar`s Wren Cistothorus apolinari were compared in five wetlands in the Eastern Andes of Colombia: four marshes in the Cundinamarca-Boyacá Altiplano at ca. 2600m elevation where the subspecies C. a. apolinari is found, and one in the Páramo de Sumapaz at 3700m where C. a. hernandezi occurs. The dominant vegetation in plots used by C. a. apolinari in the altiplano marshes was the bulrush Scirpus californicus; Scirpus patch size and vegetation density at 0-1 and 1-2 m above ground (or water) varied significantly among sites. In Sumapaz, the vegetation in plots used by C. a. hernandezi was marshy páramo dominated by Diplostephium revolutum, Gynoxis hirsuta and Hypericum myricariifolium shrubs and the stiff dwarf bamboo Chusquea tessellata, with significant differences in water depth between plots. Strategies to protect the habitat of C. a. apolinari, the most endangered subspecies, should include maintenance of large patches of bulrush and the treatment of sewage wastes to improve water quality, especially in the wetlands of the Sabana de Bogotá. For C. a. hernandezi, protection of the habitat against are and grazing is of highest priority. For each wetland a management plan should be developed.
