The Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber) in the Amazonian plain between the Caquetá and Putumayo rivers

Agricultural frontier expansion in the Colombian Amazon has extended savanna habitats, which facilitate the colonization of species from the Orinoco plains to the Amazon basin. An example of this expansion is provided by the ongoing increase in livestock activity and deforestation in the departments of Guaviare, Meta, Caquetá and Putumayo. Here we report recent records of the Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber) in the Amazon basin, specifically between the Caquetá and Putumayo rivers, municipality of Leguízamo, Putumayo. Our records extend the heretofore known geographic distribution of this wetland bird to the northwestern sector of the Amazon basin. Further monitoring and inventory of this poorly understood region will increase our understanding of its avifauna and biodiversity.
