Abstract

We update the checklist of the birds of Colombia based on new documented records since September 2017, which were assessed using, for the first time, standardized criteria by the Comité Colombiano de Registros Ornitológicos (CCRO) of the Asociación Colombiana de Ornitología. The checklist increases from 1909 to 1966 species for the continental and insular territories of Colombia. Most additions correspond to species recorded for the first time in the country, followed by species resulting from taxonomic splits and exotic species with evidence of established populations in the country. The status of 15 species is also updated based on a revision of the evidence supporting their presence in Colombia. The importance of verifiable data shared on open platforms is highlighted as participatory science contributions to the updating of records in the country. Based on this update, Colombia is the country harboring the highest richness of birds in the world.
