Abstract

From 25 November to 1 December 2022, we made opportunistic observations at 13 different sites along 550 km of the Meta River, from its mouth on the Orinoco upriver to Puerto Gaitán in the Meta department (Colombia), recording all the birds seen and heard as well as their association with different riverine habitats. Thirty-seven of the 156 birds recorded were aquatic species, 38 have been considered in the literature as residents of riverine habitats, 17 are specialists of river-created habitats, five of which are river island specialists. Two of our records, the Orinoco Spinetail (Synallaxis beverlyae) and the Lesser Wagtail-tyrant (Stigmatura napensis), represent significant range extensions. We discuss the importance of ephemeral riverine habitats for the bird fauna of the Orinoco basin.
