The Western Tanager (Piranga ludoviciana) breeds in western North America, from southeast Alaska to northeastern Mexico, in open, coniferous and mixed forests. Its migratory distribution is documented in Central America, from the Baja California Peninsula (Mexico) to Costa Rica, with some records in Panama, Cuba, and the Bahamas in the Caribbean. Only two previous records are known in South America: one in Chile and one in Ecuador. This observation constitutes the first documented record for Colombia, made on March 16, 2025. The observation site consists of a cluster of farms surrounded by secondary dry forest, located in district of La Buitrera, Cali, Valle del Cauca.
