Abstract

The Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) is a species of shorebird from the American continent that nests in estuaries and flooded pastures, as in anthropogenic perturbation areas and few or absent vegetation including agricultural areas and parking lots, causing low reproduction rates and a potential population decrease. Even if information about biological aspects is well known in North America, reproductive aspects in the south of the continent are almost unknown. This study took place in Ecoparque Sabana nature reserve, which is under ecological restoration, located in the Bogotá Savannah, Colombia. Between 2017 and 2020, through monthly surveys in ten 150 x 50 – m transects, we registered the species, number of individuals and used coverage. In addition, we search for nests weekly between March and August from 2018 to 2020, taking nests, eggs and chick measures, that are described in this study. We obtained eight reproductive events in the nature reserve, an area out of the natural nesting range reported for the species. A compilation of the Colombian reports posted in the platform eBird of C. vociferus is presented, showing higher presence in Cundinamarca. Based on this information, we present the first official report describing residence and nesting of the species in this zone of the south American continent. However, studies about the status of the population of C. vociferus in Colombia are required.
