First records of Ammodramus savannarum caucae (Emberizidae) in the upper Patía Valley, southwestern Colombia

The subspecies of the Grasshopper Sparrow Ammodramus savannarum caucae, endemic to Colombia, is considered critically endangered. It has only been recorded in the inter-Andean Cauca river valley in the departments of Cauca, Valle del Cauca and Quindío, but in recent expeditions to the upper Patía valley, we located a new population of this subspecies in a series of grassland “mesetas”. These new records substantially extend the known distribution of this threatened subspecies and establish a new potential area for its conservation.
